WHAT ARE CANNABINOIDS?
If you’ve had any experience with hemp flowers, you’ve probably heard or seen the word cannabinoid dozens of times. Or if you’re new to the CBD world, you might not have a clue what cannabinoids are. As the most important compounds in hemp products, it’s important to understand how they work and what that cannabinoid percentage actually means when you’re looking to purchase a CBD strain.
WHERE DO CANNABINOIDS COME FROM?
Cannabinoids are naturally occurring chemicals found in the cannabis sativa plant. There are actually over 60 cannabinoids in the plant, but THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol) are the most important, and well-known ones. Other important cannabinoids include:
- CBG (cannabigerols)
- CBC (cannabichromenes)
- CBN (cannabinol)
HOW DO CANNABINOIDS REACT IN THE BODY?
The effects of cannabinoids on the body and how they can improve certain conditions continues to be studied. It is known that cannabinoids react with different cannabinoid receptors within cells, the two main receptors being CB1 and CB2. The reaction that occurs from this depends on the type of cannabinoids present. For example, THC and CBN cause varying levels of psychoactivity. On the other hand, CBD, CBC, CBG do not have any psychoactive properties.
All cannabinoids listed have shown to affect the reward and pleasure responses to create the sense of calm that cannabis is known for. They also interact and alter the pain receptors, giving relief for chronic pain sufferers. When choosing a strain, you’ll want to pay attention to which cannabinoids are present and their concentration to determine the effect it will have.
HOW ARE CANNABINOID PERCENTAGES DETERMINED?
Cannabinoid percentages can vary greatly between strains. When we’re talking about hemp flowers, CBD will dominate the cannabinoid profile, while THC remains minimal. This occurs through selective breeding between flower strains. Your supplier should know the exact percentage of cannabinoids present through third party testing. This information should be presented to you through a Certificate of Analysis, showing which cannabinoids and other components are present in the strain.
WHICH STRAINS HAVE THE HIGHEST TOTAL CANNABINOIDS?
Strains with high cannabinoids aren’t necessarily better (depending on what your goals are), but they can give you a stronger effect. In our flower line Lifter takes home the prize for highest total cannabinoids at 21.38%. Other high cannabinoid strains include Sweet Wife with 18.4% and Cherry Wine with 18.14%.
